Ability/Experience
This is the highest, most competitive level of play for this age group. All players in this age category are eligible to be selected regardless of prior experience. Players are selected to play on a major league team by one of the established coaches after the evaluation process. Players not selected to a major league team are placed on a minor league team.
Player Evaluations
Mandatory. All players in the 9-12 age group (not already on a major league roster) must participate in evaluations to be considered no exceptions. See separate handout for evaluations schedules. IMPORTANT Participation on a major league team in the fall does not place a player on that team. He or she must be evaluated and drafted in the spring.
Team Selections
There are six teams of twelve players each. Players are selected via a draft process in spring to fill available openings. Only siblings may request to be on the same team. Once drafted, players remain on the same team through age 12.
Schedule
Draft is March 6. Practices begin March 8. Games played March 24 – June 7. Opening Ceremonies are April 14.
Practices and Games
Preseason practices may be daily until games begin. 2-3 practices per week after games begin. One weeknight game and one Saturday game each week. Practices typically held at Freedom Park or Whittington Field. Games played at Whittington Field (Princeton Avenue).
Game Details
All games are pitched by players. 9 players are in the field. "Standard" baseball rules are used, including a 9-player batting order with substitutions. Each player must play at least 2 innings in the fieldand get at least 1 at-bat every game. All games are played to 6 inning completion.
Post-Season Play
Tournament teams at each age level (9,10,11,12) are selected at the end of the season for a tournament June 16-23 (TOCs). All-Star teams for combined ages 9-10, 10-11, and 11-12 play beginning around July 7th. Players must meet boundary requirements to be eligible and be available for practices/games. Challenge play is also available. See separate handout.
